What to look for when buying a cricket bat.

Here at SWISH, we stock a variety of golf and cricket equipment in our Pro Shop. This includes a wide range of premium cricket bats, but how do you know which bat will suit you best? We’re here to simplify things for you!

There are three main things to look for when buying a cricket bat:

- Pickup

The pickup or balance of a cricket bat is about how weight is distributed within the bat, affecting how it feels when held. The balance, weight distribution and grip are all aspects that can affect your comfort and performance. The shape of the bat and the shape of the handle also have a significant impact. Take time to test the bat out by swinging it to see whether it fits your natural batting technique.

- Size

Choosing the correct bat size is crucial for optimal performance on the field. A properly sized bat enhances control, allowing players to swing accurately and confidently. It also maximizes power, as a bat that fits well facilitates better weight transfer during shots and better timing. If a bat is too big or too heavy, you will be limiting the bat speed you are able to generate. If a bat is too small you may struggle to get sufficient power in your shots.

- Wood quality

The type of wood not only determines the bat's durability but also significantly impacts its performance, balance and power. When it comes to the quality of wood used to make the cricket bat, the wood will usually be graded by the brand making the bat. Grades typically range from one to four with one being the best. Some brands will have player edition bats which are usually top of the range.

Another way to determine wood quality in a bat is to look at the number of grains in the bat and the ping of the face using a bat mallet. The number of grains on a cricket bat face indicates the age of the willow tree it was made from. The more grains a bat has, the better quality it is likely to be, as the highest-grade willow comes from older trees. A good cricket bat has about 6 to 12 grains.

Below is a recommended sizing chart. (Please note these numbers are based on male players)

Every cricketer is unique and will look for different things in a bat but ultimately the main thing is that you find a bat that feels comfortable in your hands and ticks all your personal boxes.

Choosing the right cricket bat is an investment in your game, and by focusing on these key features, you can find one that enhances your performance on the field. Whether you're a seasoned cricketer or a beginner just starting out, the right bat can help you elevate your game.
